After just one season, Julie and the Phantoms has been cancelled by Netflix, according to Variety. The nine-episode debut season of the series, directed and produced by Kenny Ortega (High School Musical), was released to the streamer in September 2020.
Julie and the Phantoms followed a teenage singer, played by Madison Reyes, who rekindles her love for music after forming a band with the ghosts of three dead musicians from the 1990s. Alongside Reyes, the series starred Charlie Gillespie (Runt), Owen Joyner (Knight Squad), Jeremy Shada (Adventure Time), and Savannah Lee May (Knight Squad).
Ortega released the news of his show’s cancellation on social media, with a series of pictures of the cast on set accompanied by a message expressing his gratitude for the show’s achievements with such a short run.

Since its release, the series has accumulated three Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Costume Design, Outstanding Original Song, and Multiple Camera Editing. Netflix was involved in a long period of limbo in which it was unsure of whether the series would be renewed for a sophomore season. Despite protests from fans, the streamer opted not to move forward with Julie and the Phantoms.
