It seems that fans won’t be able to return to the Otherworld. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix canceled Fate: The Winx Saga after only two seasons. The announcement was made through showrunner Brian Young (The Vampire Diaries, Kyle XY).
In an Instagram post, Young shared that Netflix had decided not to go forward with season three of Fate. He expresses his sadness over the cancellation and apologizes to the fans who expressed their love for the second season and their excitement at what would happen in the third season.
The cast also responded to the news on Instagram, mostly saying their thank you’s to the fans, the other cast members, and the crew while also expressing gratitude towards the opportunity to play the characters that meant so much to fans of the original show.
The Netflix live-action show was based on the Nickelodeon animated show Winx Club which aired for ten years in a collaboration between Italian studio Rainbow Spa and Nickelodeon. Both series follow Bloom, a fairy warrior who enrolls in a boarding school called Alfea to train and hone her skills so that when there is a threat to both the magical Otherworld and her earthly home, she will be able to defend them.
In Fate, Bloom is played by Abigail Cowen (Witch Hunt, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina); Aisha is played by Precious Mustapha (Code 404, Endeavour); Terra is played by Eliot Salt (Intelligence, Normal People); Stella is played by Hannah Van Der Westhuysen (The Sandman, The Fugitives); Musa is played by Elisha Applebaum (No Reasons), and Sky is played by Danny Griffin (Get Even, The Gentlemen).
The live-action series first premiered in January 2021 and according to The Hollywood Reporter, was part of the top 10 of Nielsen’s U.S. streaming charts for original shows for three weeks. Season two, while loved by fans, fell off the Nielsen chart after two weeks.
The second season ended on a massive cliffhanger that will now serve as the series finale. In the final episode, two characters get trapped in the Realm of Darkness after sealing it away to prevent further harm to the Otherworld. Back when the second season first aired, Young said that the cliffhanger was meant to be a way to keep the series with more possibilities of where to go in the third season. Now, the fans will have to deal with having a cliffhanger be the end of the series.
The two seasons of Fate: The Winx Saga are available to watch on Netflix.
