After a four-season run, Netflix’s Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, will be returning to the streaming giant as an interactive feature along the lines of the previously released Black Mirror film Bandersnatch. Helmed by co-creators Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, the interactive special will feature stars Ellie Kemper, Tituss Burgess, Jane Krakowski and Carol Kane, as audiences make choices for each respective character.
“We’re thrilled to announce that we’re about to start production on an all-new interactive Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt special, set to debut on Netflix in 2020,” Fey said during the Netflix For Your Consideration Emmy panel via THR.
“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt was one of the first original comedy series on Netflix, and now it will be its first interactive comedy event. Fans will be able to make choices on behalf of our characters, taking different story paths with, of course, different jokes. I think it’s a great fit for our show and will be a great way to officially complete the series.”
When the first half of Kimmy Schmidt‘s fourth and final season premiered last spring, reports surfaced that plans were in place to show more of Kimmy’s misadventures through a movie format. Carlock mentioned then, that the film was still “very much alive,” despite the series seemingly wrapping up each characters’ story line in a happy ending during the series finale.
Yet, even with the untapped potential of Kimmy’s future misadventures, audiences can expect to upcoming project to bring even more closure to the quirky bunch’s chapters. Fey and Carlock will return to executive produce alongside Jeff Richmond, Sam Means and David Miner. Universal Television will release the special.
