Netflix has announced today that it will be bringing back the massively popular superhero drama series Raising Dion for a second season. The show was listed among Netflix’s most popular titles of 2019, ranked just under 13 Reasons Why and Sex Education.
The first season of Raising Dion, which aired in October, follows the story of a single mother named Nicole who discovers that her son Dion has unnatural superpowers. Nicole has to keep Dion’s powers a secret to protect him from exploitation, all while trying to solve the mystery of her husband’s death. In addition to being one of Netflix’s top 10 most popular series of 2019, Raising Dion was also ranked as the streamer’s #1 most popular kids and family series in the past year. The show is also critically well-received, currently holding an 82% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Given the show’s success, it seemed only logical that Netflix would renew the show for a second season. Netflix made the announcement today my means of a video created by the Senegalese painter Bou Bou and posted on the Raising Dion twitter account. In the video, Bou Bou creates a portrait of Nicole, played by Alisha Wainwright, and Dion, played by Ja’Siah Young. The video ends with a confirmation that the second season is on its way.
According to Deadline, Raising Dion season 2 will consist of eight one-hour episodes, but a release date for the series has not yet been announced. Carol Barbee will be returning as the showrunner for the series, and Michael B. Jordan, who also appeared in season 1 of the series as Nicole’s husband, will be returning to executive produce. The series is also executive produced by Kenny Goodman, Kim Roth, Dennis Liu and Charles D. King’s production company MACRO.
