On Thursday morning, Netflix announced its plans to bring back to life Jim Henson’s Dark Crystal, in the way of a prequel miniseries. Set a century before the original feature, Dark Crystal: Age of Restistance will be a 10-episode Netflix original series and produced by the Jim Henson Company.
This new incarnation will be directed/executive produced by Louis Leterrier, who has directed films like Now You See Me, The Incredible Hulk and Clash of the Titans. Jeffrey Addiss, Will Matthews, and Javier Grillo-Marxuach are co-writing the 10 episodes. The series will start shooting this fall in London.
The original Dark Crystal feature was released in 1982, and directed by Jim Henson and Frank Oz. Brian Froud served as the conceptual designer on The Dark Crystal, as well as Henson’s 1986 film Labyrinth, which starred the late David Bowie. The film has three races: Skeksis, who use the ‘dark crystal to magically replenish themselves, the Mystics, a wizard race, and Gelfings, a elf-like race. In this new series, we will have the chance to return to the world of Thra, and follow the journey three Gelflings who uncover the disturbing secret behind the Skeksis’ power, and band together to star a rebellion and save their world.
According to the press release, Lisa Henson, CEO of The Jim Henson Company, said the following about the upcoming project:
Louis Leterrier is passionate about the world of ‘The Dark Crystal’ and has an incredible creative vision for the series. He brings this passion to every facet of the production as he leads the talented team of artists and writers that are bringing this entire universe to life. Netflix has a deep respect for my father’s original work and the many people it inspired. They are the perfect partners to create this next epic chapter in ‘The Dark Crystal’ story for new fans and the loyal fans who have waited so long for more adventures from this world.
Netflix VP of Content Cindy Holland said the following:
‘Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance’ will combine the art of puppetry perfected by the Jim Henson Company… with a mix of cutting-edge digital imagery and visual effects.I can’t wait for families around the world to see how we bring these unique characters to life.
The Jim Henson Creature Shop is already at work creating the practical effects for the series (i.e. the characters). The trailer features current footage of the Burbank shop, as well as old footage of Jim Henson discussing his vision for the film.
Jim Henson Company is certainly making a comeback, announcing a few weeks ago it’s involvement with R-rated puppet feature film Happytime Murders, which is set to star Melissa McCarthy. It was announced last month that the company has a Labyrinth sequel in the works. An animated feature called Which Witch?, with Billy Crystal attached, is also in development.
