Netflix has made the announcement via Twitter (@seewhatsnext) for their new animated television The Dragon Prince. The new series comes from Aaron Ehasz (Futurama and Avatar: The Last Airbender headwriter) and Justin Richmod (Uncharted game director). The series will also make an appearance at Comic-Con on July 21st. Both Ehasz and Richmond along with executive producer Giancarlo Volpe (ATLA) will give audiences a sneak peek of their new epic fantasy tale.
Here is the Twitter announcement:
As seen in the Twitter post the logline for the series is, “two human princes who forge an unlikely bond with the elfin assassin sent to kill them, embarking on an epic quest to bring peace to their warring lands.”
Ehasz time as a writer and story editor for Futurama came during both the original run (the one that FOX cancelled in 2003), as well as, Comedy Central’s revival in 2009. In between that time he was the head writer and the co-executive producer for Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender, which is still a highly respected animated series.
Richmond is also a co-creator for The Dragon Prince. He worked as a game developer on Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and then he was promoted to game director on Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception (the Uncharted series also is a well regarded franchise). Both Richmond and Ehasz co-founded a multimedia studio called Wonderstorm. The studio is working on The Dragon Prince project and is also created a game set in the same world.
The Dragon Prince announcement comes on the heels of Matt Groening’s fellow new fantasy animated series Disenchantment, which will premiere on August 17th. Both series will make an appearance at Comic-Con. The Dragon Prince is expected to be released on Netflix in September.
