Netflix Adds K-Drama ‘Crash Landing On You’ To Upcoming Slate

Netflix is continuing to add to its ongoing slate of Korean originals— the streaming giant is set to add the romantic comedy series, Crash Landing On You to its current roster and line-up. The series is set to star heartthrob Hyun Bin who is most known most for Memories of the Alhambra, and Son Ye-jin who is known for starring in the drama, Something in the Rain. Described as “Dorothy meeting the Wizard of Oz by accident,” Crash Landing On You will air later this year on the streaming platform.

Back in September, Netflix Korean content director Kim Minyoung stated that they had an ongoing plan and strategy in place that involved focusing on expanding the company’s involvement in the Korean film and TV industries by picking up new shows while renewing others. Earlier this year, series such as the supernatural action drama The School Nurse Files, sci-fi romance My Holo Love and stand-up series Park Narae: Glamor Warning, were all added as a result.

When we started three years ago, we had a high degree of confidence that Korean drama would work well in Asia, but we had no internal metrics of our own. Now that we do have the data, our task is to find titles that both address existing Korean drama franchises and draw in new audiences. Korean drama’s production quality is still growing and strengthening the fan base. And where romances were often the top titles, new genres are increasingly important.

Son Ye-jin will play Yoon Se-ri, “a beautiful heiress and leading fashion businesswoman in South Korea” who meets North Korean military officer Lee Jung-hyeok who is played by Hyun Bin. After being caught in a wind storm, Se-ri accidentally crashes into North Korean occupied territory after a paragliding accident. Meanwhile, Jung-hyeok’s life has been dismal thus far despite him believing he has a bright future ahead of himself. His “elite and prestigious background, makes him a man of principle and no-compromise” allowing him to have a ridiculous amount of self-confidence.

In the South, Yoon Se-ri comes from a wealthy and privileged background and has to figure things out after her crash landing for the first time in her life due to cultural differences. “Although Jung-hyeok and Se-ri find the situation equally absurd, they begin to have feelings for each other in spite of themselves, given that Jung-hyeok is the only one to hide and protect Se-ri from authorities in the North.” The series will be directed by Lee Jung-hyo, who who is best known for the Korean adaptation of CBS’ The Good WifeQueen of Housewives.
