Netflix Acquires the Rights to Jeff Smith’s ‘Bone’ Comic Book Series; Will Develop Animated Series

When Jeff Smith was 10 years old, he created a comic book series that would go on to such great heights and serve as the catalyst for the way children’s comic books were written, portrayed, and read. Bone was first published in 1991 and it ran up until its final year in 2004 with 55 issues. The popular comic is now making its return but as a TV series for one of the biggest streaming services today, Netflix. Netflix was able to acquire the rights to Bone after Warner Bros. was unable to adapt the comic as an animated feature film.

“I’ve waited a long time for this,” Smith said. “Netflix is the perfect home for Bone. Fans of the books know that the story develops chapter by chapter and book by book. An animated series is exactly the way to do this! The team at Netflix understands Bone and is committed to doing something special — this is good news for kids and cartoon lovers all over the world.”

According to Netflix, the series follows “the iconic Bone cousins on an adventure through a vast, uncharted desert and into a mysterious valley filled with wonderful and terrifying creatures.”

Bone was published in over 30 countries and became easily recognizable around the world. The comic famously sold over 8 million copies in North America which further solidified its growing popularity, especially in the children genre. Bone was a recipient of multiple awards, winning more than 40 of the national and international publishing awards. The comic won 10 Eisner Awards which was the highest honor for comic book writers. It was also rewarded with The French Alph Art and 11 Harvey Awards. Time Magazine added Bone to its coveted list of “Ten Best Graphic Novels of All Time.”

Jeff Smith will look over the TV series. No production date has been set.
