According to The Hollywood Reporter, Milos Forman’s (Amadeus, Hair) classic One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest may be getting a revival as a television series. As one of only three movies to win the Big Five Oscars, it is perhaps Forman’s most acclaimed work.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Producer Paul Zaentz (Ratched, Coup 53) spoke to the press at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival about the possibility of reimagining the film as a series. Zaentz is connected to the original through his Uncle, Saul Zaentz (The English Patient, Amadeus), who produced the film alongside Michael Douglas (Face/Off, Made in America). Douglas was also in attendance at the Czech festival for a 50th anniversary screening of the film.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter Ken Kesey (Sailor Song, Demon Box) wrote the source material chronicling the inner workings of a mental institution in 1962. Zaentz previously balked at any modern interpretation of the film.
“Over the last 50 years, there have been hundreds of calls from studios, directors and producers who want to remake the movie, and we would never allow it to be remade if they were just going to do it as Milos made it,” Zaentz stated. “It would be a dishonor.” via The Hollywood Reporter.
However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, a new take is in the works.“We just made an arrangement with Ken Kesey’s family to possibly do a television series, but it’s based on the book, and the book was told through the eyes of Chief Bromden,” stated Zaentz. Brodmen, portrayed in the Foreman film by Will Sampson (The White Buffalo, The Outlaw Josey Wales), is a tall deaf mute Native American who befriends Jack Nicholson’s (Chinatown, The Shining) Randle.
The Hollywood Reporter shared that Zaentz proposed that the series could provide a continuation of the original film, with Season One covering Brodman’s perspective in the first film and Season Two delving into his life after he escapes. “At the end of the first, the R.P. McMurphy, the Jack Nicholson, character would die. And then the second year would be what happens to the Chief after he escapes.” said Zaentz.
The original cast includes Louis Fletcher (Girlboss, Shameless) in her Academy Award-winning role as Nurse Ratched, as well as Danny DeVito (Matilda, It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia), Sydney Lassick (Carrie, The X-Files), William Redfield (Death Wish, Fantastic Voyage), Christopher Lloyd (Back To The Future,The Addams Family), and Brad Dourif (The Pitt, Chucky) in supporting roles.
