For fans of the iconic Australian soap opera, good news comes as production has officially wrapped on the final episode of Amazon’s revival of Neighbours, according to Deadline. The final installment will premiere on Prime Video in December, marking another farewell for the long-running series.
According to Deadline, executive producer Jason Herbison (Shortland Street, Home and Away) revealed that the final episode of this revival concludes the series “on a hopeful note,” leaving the door open for a possible second revival in the future. The series, which first aired in 1985, experienced multiple shifts in distribution over recent years. Following its original cancellation by UK broadcaster Channel 5 in 2022, Neighbours was briefly saved by Amazon’s ad-supported platform Freevee.
According to Deadline, Freevee picked up the show in a surprise deal with production company Fremantle, producing an additional 460 episodes. This brought the show’s episode total to over 9,000—a milestone Herbison and the cast reportedly take pride in.
“Neighbours is a special show,” Herbison stated in an official release via Deadline, “and it’s been a privilege to make the recent seasons for our loyal viewers around the world.”
The most recent cancellation was confirmed in February 2025, when Amazon decided to cease production. This followed Freevee’s own shutdown in late 2024, as first reported by Deadline. Despite the end of new episodes, the show is not disappearing entirely. All existing episodes will remain on Prime Video and continue airing on Australia’s Network 10.
Deadline reports Some of the show’s most iconic alumni, including Margot Robbie (Barbie, I, Tonya), Kylie Minogue (Moulin Rouge!, San Andreas), Jason Donovan (Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of The War of the Worlds), and Guy Pearce (Memento, L.A. Confidential), previously returned for what was then thought to be the series finale in 2022. Their returns offered an emotional send-off for longtime fans, further highlighting the show’s lasting cultural impact in Australia and abroad.
This isn’t the first time Neighbours has navigated an uncertain future. Previous reporting at mxdwn detailed that the show has often found new life thanks to devoted viewership and international nostalgia.
