NBCUniversal has renewed its deal with Jimmy Fallon (Password, Band of Brothers, Girls5Eva) to keep presenting The Tonight Show till 2028, The Hollywood Reporter reports. The news comes month after the announcement of Seth Meyers’ (Saturday Night Live, The Awesomes, Seth Meyers: Lobby Baby) Late Night show, which will continue for the next four years. Both shows have currently been on TV for over a decade now. The NBCUniversal Media Group chairman, Mark Lazarus, has shared his thoughts about Fallon’s show renewal in an exclusive statement.
“For nearly 30 years, Jimmy Fallon has brought laughter into the homes of millions and charmed audiences from the stages of 30 Rock,” Lazarus explained via The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s been a privilege to witness Jimmy at the helm of the The Tonight Show, and we’re thrilled to see what innovations he and the incredible staff will deliver in the years to come at the network.”
Furthermore, Fallon has agreed with Lazarus in an exclusive statement via The Hollywood Reporter. “For nearly 30 years, I’ve brought laughter into the homes of millions and charmed audiences from the stages of 30 Rock. It’s been a privilege to be at the helm of the The Tonight Show, and I’m thrilled to see what innovations me and the incredible staff will deliver in the years to come at the network. No, I’m not changing my quote. Tell Mark to change his.”
When it was first released, Jay Leno (Last Man Standing, Jay Leno’s Garage, South Park) hosted The Tonight Show, but Fallon took over in 2014 after being cast member of Late Night for five years. Furthermore, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Fallon was a Saturday Night Live cast member from 1998 through 2004. During his last three years there, he co-hosted Weekend Update alongside Tina Fey (Mean Girls, Sisters, Date Night).
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fallon faced allegations last year in an exclusive Rolling Stone article for “toxic workplace” while hosting The Tonight Show. He later apologized to the show’s crew members for his behavior, sharing that the show is supposed to be “fun” and “inclusive for everybody.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal Television and Lorne Michaels’ (Tommy Boy, Saturday Night Live, 30 Rock) Broadway Video produce The Tonight Show. Michaels is the executive producer, and Gerard Bradford (Late Night With Jimmy Fallon) and showrunner Chris Miller (Penguins Of Madagascar, Shrek The Third) also produce the show.
The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon is available to stream on NBC from 11:35 p.m. PT/10:35 p.m. ET each weeknight.
