NBC Cancels Plans for ‘Murder, She Wrote’ Reboot Series

The network announced plans to cancel the reboot series starring Octavia Spencer.

The reboot which received a pilot order from NBC last October is not going forward. David Janollari was the executive producer of the series and Spencer would have played the role of a writer who solved mysteries.

The original series ran for 12 season beginning in 1984 and starred Angela Lansbury as Jessica Fletcher, a retired teacher who had detective skills which she used to solve murder in her hometown, Maine.

The reboot series were met with criticism by Lansbury as reported by The Wrap. In an interview late last year, Lansbury called the project a “mistake” even though she mentioned that she respects Spencer’s work.

“I think it’s a mistake to call it ‘Murder, She Wrote,’” Lansbury said, “because ‘Murder, She Wrote’ will always be about a Cabot Cove and this wonderful little group of people who told those lovely stories and enjoyed a piece of that place, and also enjoyed Jessica Fletcher, who is a rare and very individual kind of person.”

Alexandra Cunningham (Desperate Housewives) was writing and producing the new series alongside David Janollari.
