According to the Hollywood Reporter, American comedian Natasha Rothwell (White Lotus, Insecure) will be developing a new half-hour comedy show for Hulu by the name of How to Die Alone. Rothwell will purportedly write, co-showrun, and even star in the straight-to-order series hailing from Onyx Collective and ABC Signature.
As written by the Hollywood Reporter, How to Die Alone follows Melissa, played by Rothwell, an overweight, black woman who has yet to experience the true meaning of love, but after a frightening, though albeit humorous brush with death, Melissa embarks on a soul-searching journey of self-discovery and self-actualization in order to become the best version of herself by any means necessary. Vera Santamaria (Bojack Horseman, Orange is the New Black) will co-showrun How to Die Alone with Rothwell. Both women will also executive produce the series alongside Desiree Akhavan (The Miseducation of Cameron Post, The Bisexual).
How to Die Alone is also the first project to come from Rothwell’s Big Hattie Productions, an affiliate branch of Onyx Collective and ABC Signature. The show is currently one of many projects that Rothwell has lined up for the near future. Other such works include her performance in the upcoming prequel film to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, titled Wonka, as well as the latest Disney animated feature film, Wish.
Rothwell was one of the many artistic talents scouted by Onyx Collectives, among a score of other notable candidates including Ryan Coogler (the Black Panther duology, the Creed franchise), Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, The Glass Castle), and Prentice Penny (Uncorked, The Hustle), the latter of whom Rothwell had previously worked with on the 2016 comedy drama, Insecure.
So far, a release date for How to Die Alone has yet to be announced by Hulu, Onyx Collective, or ABC Signature.
