More Oscar caliber talent is coming to Netflix.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, two- time Academy Award nominee Naomi Watts will be starring in and executive producing Netflix’s upcoming Gypsy. The dark psychological thriller centers around psychiatrist Jean Holloway (Watts) who falls into danger after developing intimate relationships with people in her patients’ lives. The project got a 10 episode order back in January. The series is created by Lisa Rubin.
Universal Television will also be producing in a partnership with Netflix that has already brought many a viewer joy via Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Aziz Ansari’s Master of None. Also bringing the Oscar prestige is Working Title, the production company behind Les Miserables, The Theory of Everything and Mr. Bean’s Holiday. Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner (Fargo, The Big Lebowski) are also among the executive producers.
This marks the third major project on Rubin’s plate in addition to 2 novels she’s adapting, Variety reports. One is Gayle Forman’s emotional character study I Was Here for New Line along with Jessica Tom’s biting peak behind the scenes of New York’s dining scene Food Whore for Dreamworks.
Naomi Watts has built up an impressive resume in film. She was nominated for the Best Leading Actress Academy Award in 2004 for her stripped down role 21 Grams and 2013 for her three- hankie worthy The Impossible. Most probably recognize her from Peter Jackson’s 2005 redux of King Kong or the movie responsible for my fear of horses The Ring.
Netflix’s recent move to considerably expand its original programming in a $5 billion effort has allowed an expansion in genres. The streaming giant is now adding Gypsy along with Jason Bateman’s Ozark and David Fincher’s Mind Hunter to it’s list of psychological dramas. The tonal variety is also being matched by star power. The Emma Stone- Jonah Hill reunion Maniac was also recently picked up.
