MTV U.K. show Geordie Shore brings in high ratings entering into its sixth season.
The hit show that parallels MTV’s successful Jersey Shore premiered its season six opener Tuesday night at 10 PM. The initial airing drew 508,000 viewers, says the Hollywood Reporter. This number shows a twenty-five percent increase from last season’s opener, which aired earlier this year. The season six opener was the show’s second most-watched episode of the series.
The Hollywood Reporter continues to explain that, excluding U.K. terrestrial TV channels, these numbers made Geordie Shore the highest-rated program of the day on pay TV for total viewers and the 16-34 year old category. The total number of viewers for the premiere is expected to increase, as the young adult audiences tend to catch up on episodes later on in the week.
The sixth season was filmed in Australia and brings back cast member Jay Gardner, who was featured in the first three seasons of the show.
Additionally, MTV said that the series was the most tweeted about show on TV Tuesday night, with more than 155,000 total tweets.
Kerry Taylor, head of MTV U.K., earlier this year announced that Geordie Shore would go global. “Based on the unprecedented multiseason success in the U.K. and initial launches on MTV in Australia, Southern Europe and MTV.com in the U.S., MTV is extending Geordie Shore to all the network’s regions,” the network said back then. More than 20 MTV channels are premiering the show in 2013 across Asia, Latin America and northern Europe, notes the Hollywood Reporter.
At a programming presentation earlier this year, MTV U.K. executives predicted that 2013 would become its “biggest and best [year] yet.”
