Iman Vellani (The Marvels) made her first Marvel debut in the TV series, Ms. Marvel, as the title character Kamala Khan, in which she discovers her mutant powers and learns to control them. According to ScreenRant, in an interview with The Direct, Vellani displays her comic knowledge by stating she wants to see Doc. X in a possible second season because she believes the villain can “really resonate with the Gen Z audience.”
“It would be interesting messing with the audience’s mind when you have a villain, who only exists on your phone, and on your laptops, and on all your screens that we can’t avoid,” Vellani stated via ScreenRant. “I think it’d be really interesting position to put them all in to fight against something that you can’t even see, right? Yeah. Yeah, that’s one of my favorite comic storylines. So I would love to see that play out.”
According to ScreenRant, the cyber villain made its debut in Ms Marvel Vol. 4’s fourteenth issue. Originally uploaded in a game of World of Battlecraft, the computer virus began taking over gamers’ accounts, including Kamala’s. Soon the AI villain infected the majority of devices in the NYC area, ultimately blackmailing to reveal Kamala’s identity as Ms. Marvel if they weren’t granted access to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s database.
Created by Sana Amanat (Captain Marvel), Adrian Alphona (Runaways), Jamie McKelvie (The Wicked + The Divine), and G. Willow Wilson (The Bird King) as Marvel’s first Muslim superhero, Kamala is a 16-year-old Jersey City Pakistani-American teen who obsessively adores superheroes, with Carol Danvers’ Captain Marvel as her favorite. Her admiration for these masked crusaders keeps her dreaming big, much to her parents’ dismay, who rather see their daughter focus on the normal things of life. Kamala’s life becomes anything but normal when she develops powers and becomes a hero for her community. But Kamala can’t help but wonder if the world is ready for a Brown girl like her to save the day.
