Initially announced as a 2021 release by Marvel executives, Disney Plus executives revealed today at their latest earnings call that Ms. Marvel will more likely premiere in late 2022. Also joining that show with delays are Andor and their live action Pinocchio movie. Disney executives want these shows to release during their second quarter. Seeing as how the quarter began in October, audiences can expect a July or August release for Ms. Marvel.
The show will introduce Kamila Khan, played by newcomer Iman Vellani, as the newest hero and first Muslim hero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Vellani is already expected to join seasoned MCU alum Brie Larson (Room, Captain Marvel) as Kamila Khan in the upcoming sequel to Captain Marvel: The Marvels.
This delay is not the first slate of delays for the MCU. In October, Disney announced that multiple high-profile sequels were receiving delayed release dates, such as Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness and Thor Love and Thunder.
“The fourth quarter will likely be more indicative of what our slate could look like, once we have tentpole content flowing steadily from all of our industry-leading creative engines,” Disney CFO Christine McCarthy said during the earnings call. “Q4 will be the first time in Disney Plus history that we plan to release original content throughout the quarter from Disney, Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar and NatGeo, all in one quarter. This includes highly anticipated titles such as Ms. Marvel, Andor and Pinocchio.”
In the meantime, MCU fans can fill the void with the recently released Eternals movie and with the upcoming Hawkeye series centered around Jeremy Renner’s (Wind River, Avengers) archery master Hawkeye. Also starring in that show is Hailee Steinfeld (Pitch Perfect, Edge of Seventeen) as yet another new hero: Kate Bishop. That show will air on Disney Plus on Nov. 24th.
