Prime Video’s newest series, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, hit the ground running with its debut earlier this month. According to Deadline, Mr. & Mrs. Smith is the No.1 series on Prime Video in more than 130 countries since its Feb. 2 release. The show is one of Amazon’s top five new series premieres ever based on the total U.S. viewers.
Amazon is known for keeping its viewership data under wraps. Yet, as Deadline notes, next month’s Nielsen streaming charts should bring in more numbers for the series.
In addition, the streamer has been heavily publicizing U.S. viewership since Nielsen specifically measures the demographic. In the past, the streamer has frequently chosen to encourage worldwide viewership, which is far more challenging to measure without enough data from Amazon.
Due to how the streamer operates, it’s safe to say that Mr. & Mrs. Smith will show up on the Nielsen charts even when all eight episodes debuted simultaneously. As per Deadline, this would give the series a leg up regarding the viewing time during the first few weeks of its release. Nielsen measures its list by the series’ total views.
Starring Maya Erskine (Wine Country, Blue Eye Samurai) and Donald Glover (Community, Atlanta), Mr. & Mrs. Smiths’ official synopsis via Deadline reads, “Two lonely strangers who land jobs working for a mysterious spy agency that offers them a glamorous life of espionage, wealth, world travel, and a dream brownstone in Manhattan. The catch? New identities in an arranged marriage as Mr. and Mrs. John and Jane Smith. Now hitched, John and Jane navigate a high-risk mission every week while also facing a new relationship milestone. Their complex cover story becomes even more complicated when they catch real feelings for each other. What’s riskier: espionage or marriage?”
Guest stars on the series are Sarah Paulson (American Horror Story, 12 Years a Slave), Alexander Skarsgård (True Blood, Succession), Sharon Horgan (Bad Sisters, Pulling), Eiza González (Baby Driver, Bloodshot), Billy Campbell (Cardinal, Enough), Paul Dano (War & Peace, Pantheon), Ron Pearlman (Hellboy, Sons of Anarchy), Úrsula Corberó (Burning Body, Snake Eyes), Parker Posey (Scream 3, Blade: Trinity), Wagner Moura (Elite Squad, Narcos), John Turturro (Barton Fink, Quiz Show) and Michaela Coel (Chewing Gum, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever).
Mr. & Mrs. Smith was created by Glover and Francesca Sloane (Fargo, Atlanta), with Sloane as the showrunner. The series is a co-production between New Regency and Amazon MGM Studios and is an adaptation of the New Regency 2005 film by the same name; Yariv Milchan (The Creator, Barbarian) from New Regency executively produced the series.
