On Monday, Mindy Kaling (The Office, The Mindy Project) provided an update about her upcoming HBO Max comedy The Sex Lives of College Girls. The producer posted a picture of herself on the Warner Bros. lot, where production on the series has finally gotten underway despite “almost [getting] shut down like five times because of Covid” (Instagram).

Kaling’s production company, Kaling International, penned the 13-episode deal for The Sex Lives of College Girls with Warner Bros. and HBO Max back in October 2019, according to Variety. The series has cast Pauline Chalamet (The King of Staten Island), Amrit Kaur (The D Cut), and Broadway performers Reneé Rapp (Mean Girls) and Alyah Chanelle Scott (The Book of Mormon) as four roommates at New England College Essex University. The four protagonists are “equal parts lovable and infuriating,” Variety reports, referencing the series’ official description.

Howard Klein (The Office, The Mindy Project) will serve alongside Kaling as an executive producer, with Justin Noble (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) as showrunner. Kaling told PopCulture.com “I feel really lucky because the team that we have assembled for both of those shows are kind of a hybrid of people I knew from The Office and The Mindy Project.” The second show Kaling refers to is her Netflix coming-of-age comedy Never Have I Ever, which has taken an extended holiday production hiatus as a result of COVID-19, according to PopCulture.com.
Both Kaling’s Monday announcement and her PopCulture.com interview reference the frustrations of trying to get a project underway amid the madness of COVID-19, particularly in Los Angeles. “If you live in California, people are like, are you serious?” Kaling told PopCulture.com when first indicating that The Sex Lives of College Girls was set to start production in February “And it’s like, yeah, I guess it’s moving forward and we have a way to shoot it safely.”
For those looking forward to Kaling’s new HBO Max comedy, this is certainly a welcomed update. Though, with COVID precautions and procedures slowing down the rate with which shows are able to film, there’s still no projections as to when The Sex Lives of College Girls will premiere on HBO Max.
