Mindhunter star Holt McCallany (Fight Club, The Iron Claw) tantalized fans with the possibility of a continuation of the critically acclaimed Netflix series on Tuesday, according to an interview with CBR. While promoting his upcoming maritime crime drama series The Waterfront, the actor commented on the series’ infamous cancellation and a conversation he had with its executive producer/director David Fincher (Gone Girl, Zodiac) about a potential revival, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
“I had a meeting with David Fincher in his office a few months ago,” McCallany told CBR, “and he said to me that there is a chance that it may come back as three two-hour movies, but I think it’s just a chance. “I know there are writers that are working, but you know, David has to be happy with scripts.”
Mindhunter saw McCallany step into the role of Bill Tench, a member of the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit in the late 70s who works with fellow agent Holden Ford, portrayed by Johnathan Groff (Glee, Hamilton) as attempt to formulate a method of predicting the behavior of serial killers via psychoanalysis of various real-life killers. In spite of a 99 percent critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and a stinger that teased the agents’ next opponent would be notorious killer Dennis Rader (also known as the BTK Strangler), Netflix put the series on an “indefinite hold” in January of 2020 (via TVLine), citing Fincher’s busy schedule. In a February 2023 interview with Forbes, though, Fincher confirmed the show had been permanently cancelled by Netflix, stating, “it’s a very expensive show and, in the eyes of Netflix, we didn’t attract enough of an audience to justify such an investment.”
Ever since, fans have been clamoring for a resolution that seemed as if it would never come — until now. While McCallany emphasized Mindhunter’s return was only a possibility, he seemed optimistic to CBR about receiving a greenlight from Netflix somewhere down the line due to his relationship with the streaming platform.”The good news is that we’re at Netflix with The Waterfront, and those movies would also be for Netflix. So I think that in terms of dates and logistics, it could all be worked out, but it has to do, you know, with David really having the time and the inclination and being happy, you know, with the material. And, you know, that’s a big question mark. And we gotta wait for the best actor on Broadway,” he added, referring to Groff.
Seasons one and two of Mindhunter are available to stream now on Netflix, as is season one of The Waterfront, which premiered on June 19th.
