According to a Deadline article, Ugly Betty stars Micheal Urie (Goodrich, Maestro) and Beckie Newton (Otherhood, August Rush) have reunited again to give fans and audiences a podcast about the classic ABC sitcom. The podcast, titled Still Ugly, is a rewatch podcast where Urie and Newton will go through the show and recall funny memories. The classic sitcom aired on ABC from 2006 to 2010 and starred actress America Ferrera (Barbie, Dumb Money).
According to Deadline, the show centers around Betty Suarez, played by Ferrera, and her journey as she becomes the assistant to editor-in-chief Daniel Meade ( Eric Mabius Young Hercules, Jackson’s Wharf) for Mode fashion magazine. Urie and Newton played assistants who were very catty and rude to Bett. The two characters got along because of their many interests including celebrity gossip, fashion, and teasing the main character. Their bond on and off screen provided many key comedy points throughout the seasons.
According to Deadline‘s interview, the duo was a happy accident.
“There was no plan for Marc and Amanda to be a duo,” Urie noted via Deadline. “And it wasn’t until it was like Episode 3 or 4 where Becki and I had like a three-line exchange in a scene. There was just like a side exchange, not an important part of the scene at all, and we turned it into like a 10-line exchange, and a producer clocked it and said, ‘OK, these two, this is something. Let’s keep going back to this well.’”
Although they have both gone on to different shows, Urie and Newton have found joy in coming back together through the podcast. Deadline states that it was because of the roles that they are playing now that they were able to come back together. Both actors are currently playing lawyers: Urie is gearing to return for season three of Apple TV+’s Shrinking, and Newton is joining season four of Netflix’s Lincoln Lawyer.
As for the podcast, Urie and Newton have talked about having people from the cast come on the show. Urie informed Deadline, “We talked about every single episode”. There may even be a reboot in the works! However, it is unclear when the podcast will be released.
