After hosting Live! With Kelly and Michael for four years after former host Regis Philbin retired, it was announced that Michael Strahan will be leaving the show to join Good Morning America, according to Variety. He’s set to officially join the show in a full time capacity in September. Strahan currently appears twice a week on GMA in addition to appearing on Live! With Kelly and Michael.
In addition to co-hosting Live!, Strahan is a football analyst for Fox, as Strahan played football for the New York Giants for his entire career, from 1993 through 2007. He also hosts a kids show on Nickelodeon.
Strahan will still be an analyst for Fox for the upcoming football season.
In a memo that was sent to staff this morning, James Goldston, the president of ABC News, informed the staff about Strahan’s hiring, saying “Michael has been a stellar addition to the broadcast. Over the past two years on GMA, he’s proven to be a tireless and versatile broadcaster with an incredible ability to connect with people, from veterans to American pop culture icons and newsmakers. He will end a four year run as Kelly Ripa’s co-host on Live!, where he has honed his skills as an interviewer with genuine warmth and a quick wit. At GMA, he’ll now have even more opportunities to tell stories that inspire, inform and empower people.”
Some of the previous pieces he’s done on GMA included Jennifer Lopez going back to her childhood neighborhood and the reunion between two Green Berets who served in Afghanistan together.
Strahan took over co-hosting duties of Live! in 2012 after original host, Regis Philbin, retired in 2011 after cohosting the show since its inception in 1983. Though there were many cohosts along Philbin, notably Kathie Lee Gifford, who hosted from 1985 until 2000. Her replacement, Kelly Ripa, has been with the show since 2001.
Strahan leaving Live! is viewed by some as a way for GMA to regain some of its viewership that it has lost over the years to other popular morning show Today, which airs on NBC. GMA became the number one morning show in 2012 after a 16-year reign by Today. However, recently the show’s viewership has decreased and Today has been regaining its lead.
A new replacement is expected to be announced for Kelly in September when Strahan leaves. Until then, fans of Strahan can relive him joining the show on YouTube.
