Michael J. Fox (Back to the Future, Spin City) will reportedly be making his return to television on season three of Apple TV’s comedy series Shrinking. According to Deadline, he will be starring in a major guest role, though details have remained scarce.
The five-time Emmy winner is rumored to be playing a character connected to Harrison Ford’s (Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, Raiders of the Lost Ark) character, Paul Rhoades, who was revealed to have Parkinson’s Disease in season one, according to Deadline. Fox has battled the disease for over three decades, making his inclusion in the show all the more symbolic.
This also marks a reunion between Fox and Shrinking co-creator and executive producer Bill Lawrence, who was also the creator of Spin City. Fox starred on the show for four seasons before leaving due to his illness. Fox won his fifth Emmy for his role in the ABC comedy, according to Deadline.
Since then, Fox starred in his show The Michael J. Fox Show, and also made appearances on The Good Wife, Lawrence’s Scrubs, Rescue Me, Boston Legal, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Designated Survivor, which earned him eight more Emmy nominations, according to Deadline. His upcoming appearance on Shrinking is his first acting role since appearing on The Good Fight in 2020.
Shrinking, starring Ford and Jason Segel (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, The End of the Tour), follows the story of a therapist, played by Segel, who breaks all the written and unwritten rules of therapy by sharing exactly what he thinks, influencing the lives of those around him as well as his own. According to Deadline, in addition to Fox, season three is also adding Jeff Daniels (The Squid and the Whale, Dumb and Dumber), Sherry Cola (Joy Ride, Good Trouble), and Isabella Gomez (One Day at a Time, Head of the Class) to the cast.
