Iconic actress Meryl Streep (Devil Wears Prada, Death Becomes Her) appeared for the first time on the renowned sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live for the 50th Anniversary Special. Streep has yet to host SNL despite her tenured career.
She made her debut in the recurrent bit “Close Encounter”, a sketch about a group of people who experience an alien abduction. She co-starred in the sketch along Kate Mckinnon (Ghostbusters, Barbie), Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us, Narcos) and Woody Harrelson (The Edge of Seventeen, Champions) according to CNN.
In the sketch, friends played by Pascal and Woody describe the abduction as a positive experience. Mckinnon and Streep play Colleen Rafferty junior and senior, a mother daughter duo, who have a very different experience. The foursome is interviewed by two government officials, played by Jon Hamm (Mad Men, Babydriver) and Aidy Bryant (Shrill, I Feel Pretty).
Streep and Mckinnon wear similar outfits in the sketch, high-rise mom jeans and pastel printed button-ups with a cigarette and styrofoam cup in hand, noted by CNN.
The elder Rafferty illustrates her graphic abduction experience, using strong language and mentioning how the aliens abandoned her in a closet. She later broke out of the closet to save her daughter.
Pascal and Streep establish flirtatious banter, despite protests from Mckinnon.
“Yeah, well, a good mother can also be a bad girl,” Streep tells Pascal, quoted by CNN. She then turned towards him with her legs spread, attempting a sexual suggestion.
The 50th anniversary special featured many famous stars, including a debut SNL cameo by Jack Nicholson (The Shining, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest).
The show premiered Saturday, Feb. 15 on NBC and Peacock live stream. The show has 14.8 million viewers, which is 200 percent above their average viewership, according to Vareity. It is available to stream on the Peacock app.
