Melissa Mccarthy Joins Hulu’s ‘Nine Perfect Strangers’ With Nicole Kidman

Melissa Mccarthy is set to star in Hulu’s Limited Series, Nine Perfect Strangers, The Hollywood Reporter has learned, marking a return to form and television for the Oscar nominee who will also be lending her talents as an executive producer to the show. Nine Perfect Strangers is based on a novel by Liane Moriarity, who authored Big Little Lies, a best selling book that was adapted into a critically acclaimed TV series for HBO released in 2017. Hulu’s newest acquisition will costar Nicole Kidman opposite of Mccarthy, who will be executive producing the show along with the former Mike & Molly star. Nine Perfect Strangers has already inherited several of the talent and ingredients that managed to whip up Big Little Lies and turn it into a success. Aside from both being adapted from Moriarity’s works and involvement from Kidman, David E. Kelly, the writer and showrunner for Big Little Lies, will be doing the same for Nine Perfect Strangers, and Bruce Papandrea will serve as an executive producer as he did for the prolific HBO show.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Nine Perfect Strangers will take place at a boutique wellness resort. There, nine city dwellers are going to attempt to improve their circumstances and try to forge or find a path that will lead to better lives for all strangers involved. The resort is reportedly moderated by Masha, played by Nicole Kidman, who attempts to recover their minds and bodies. Mccarthy is Francis, one of the nine strangers. This will be Mccarthy’s first regular television role since Mike & Molly, which finished its six season run in 2016. Since then, though Mccarthy had a recurring role on TV Land’s Nobodies, Mccarthy has been seen more on the silver screen than the small, and had earned an Oscar nomination in 2019 for Best Actress for Can You Ever Forgive Me?

Teaming with Kelly are Samantha Strauss and John Henry Butterworth as co showrunners. Though there is no specific premiere date, Nine Perfect Strangers is projected to debut sometime in 2021.
