Variety reports that the premiere date for Velma season two has been set for Max. On April 25th, the ten-episode second season of the animated series featuring the “well-known Scooby-Doo character” will premiere. In January 2023, Velma made its premiere on Max. The first season of the show has a 39% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, reflecting the series’ overwhelmingly negative reception upon premiere.
As Variety notes, the official logline is as follows: “Before it’s too late, Velma played by Mindy Kaling (The Office, Late Night) must figure out how to balance her detective work with the demands of her newfound popularity as an even spookier mystery grips Crystal Cove. Her devoted friends Glenn Howerton’s (Blackberry, The Strangers) Fred, Constance Wu’s (Crazy Rich Asians, Hustlers) Daphne, and Sam Richardson’s (Detroiters, Veep) Norville are unable to assist her because of their own struggles and, worse yet, their detention.”
Variety claims that Kaling, Howard Klein (Jessica Jones, Late Night) of 3 Arts Entertainment, Elijah Aron (BoJack Horseman, Raising Hope), and Charlie Grandy (Saturday Night Live, Guys With Kids) developed the series and serve as executive producers through Charlie Grandy Productions. Amy Winfrey (Making Fiends, South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut) is the supervising producer and Jessica Kumai Scott (Syriana, Hesher) is the co-executive producer. The show’s producers are Kandace Reuter (Scooby-Doo! The Sword and The Scoob, Aquaman: King of Atlantis) and Rick Williams (Raven’s Home, Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous), with co-producers Greg Gallant (Perfect Harmony, Speechless) and Moss Perricone (The Other Two, Beavis and Butt-Head). The studio in charge of production is Warner Bros. Animation. Warner Bros. has an overall deal with Kaling and her Kaling International banner.
Jane Lynch (Another Cinderella Story, Glee), Wanda Sykes (The UpShaws, Black-ish), Cherry Jones (Defending Jacob, Five Days At Memorial), Frank Welker (What’s New Scooby Doo?, Aladdin), Nicole Byer (Nailed It!, Wipeout), Gary Cole (NCIS, One Hour Photo), Andia Winslow (Call Of Duty: Vanguard, A League Of Their Own), Sara Ramirez (Grey’s Anatomy, And Just Like That…), Russell Peters (Source Code, Hip-Hop Evolution), Melissa Fumero (All My Children, Brooklyn Nine-Nine), and Sarayu Blue (The Unicorn, I Feel Bad) are part of the cast of the show.
“It’s the halfway point between Daria and one of the many post-Scream meta-horror movies that misunderstood what people liked about Scream, if beloved characters weren’t shoehorned into it, it could be a great show. Velma‘s greatest enigma is the reason for its existence.”
