The drama-comedy series by Max entitled Hacks is set to see its third season. According to the Max press release, the critically acclaimed series, starring Hannah Einbinder (Julia, How to Be Broke) and Jean Smart (Garden State Big Mouth), is set to premiere this spring. The news of season three was posted and revealed on the show’s Instagram. There has not been an official premiere date set yet.
The first season of Hacks follows Einbinder’s character, Ava Daniels, a young writer who specializes in comedy. She is employed to vamp up the act of Deborah Vance, an older comedy legend portrayed by Smart. In the beginning, the pair are very different from one another, but when Deborah takes on being a mentor for Ava, it leads to an unlikely bond between the two. The show also features Carl Clemons-Hopkins (Chicago P.D., Star Trek: Lower Decks) as Marcus, the COO of Deborah’s company and her advisor.
There are also many recurring in the series such as Christopher McDonald (Thelma & Louise, Happy Gilmore), Kaitlin Olson (Finding Dory, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), Jane Adams (Happiness, Poltergeist), Poppy Liu (Better Call Saul, Dead Ringers), Paul W. Downs (Rough Night, Broad City), Rose Abdoo (Bad Teacher, My Best Friend’s Wedding), Mark Indelicato (Ugly Betty, White Bird in a Blizzard), Angela E. Gibbs (On My Block, Black Jesus), Meg Stalter (Queer as Folk, Cora Bora), Luenell (The Rock, A Star is Born), Johnny Sibilly (Pose, The Deuce), Ally Maki (Toy Story 4, Wrecked), Jos Mande (Parks and Recreation, The Good Place) and Lorenza Izzo (Knock Knock, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood).
Season two also welcomed some new cast members to the series, such as Laurie Metcalf (Roseanne, Lady Bird), Ming-Na Wen (Mulan, Street Fighter), Martha Kelly (Marriage Story, Euphoria) and Susie Essman (Bolt, Curb Your Enthusiasm) who feature on the series as recurring guest stars. Some guest stars on the series have been Devon Sawa (Final Destination, Casper) and Margaret Cho (All-American Girl, 30 Rock).
Hacks was made by showrunners Jen Statsky (The Good Place, Broad City), Downs and Lucia Aniello (The Baby-Sitters Club, Rough Night). Aniello and Downs are executive producers for their company, Paulilu, while Statsky is executive producer for First Thought Productions. Michael Schur (The Office, Saturday Night Live) is another executive producer for the company Fremulon, and he will be collaborating with Morgan Sackett (Veep, Parks and Recreation) and David Miner (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, 30 Rock) for 3 Arts Entertainment. The studio that produces Hacks is UTV.
The announcement of season three came in June of 2022, shortly following the finale of season two. The first season of Hacks debuted in May of 2021, and season two followed in May of 2022. Hacks has obtained lots of praise from critics as season one was nominated for a whopping 15 Emmys. The halt for season three is due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes that ended last September and November, respectively.
