It seems the fans will get to go back to Hogwarts. Yesterday, Warner Bros. Discovery had a streaming event where they made many announcements, including the renaming of HBO Max into Max. During this time they also announced slew of new TV shows that will premiere on the renamed platform including Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, a Game of Thrones prequel; The Conjuring series; The Penguin series; Big Bang Theory spinoff; The Sympathizer; True Detective: Night Country, and an animated Gremlins series. According to Deadline, one of the new shows announced during the event was a Harry Potter TV series.
HBO explained that the show will retell the story of Harry Potter and his time at Hogwarts. They told the fans that the series will be a faithful adaptation of the books, and to achieve this, they will adapt each book into a season. HBO has also said that they plan the series to run for “ten consecutive years” which has caused intrigue in fans since the original book series only has seven books.
According to Deadline, the show is set to premiere around 2025-26 on Max. The show is still in its very early stages, with an ongoing search for a showrunner underway. As for the cast, many fans have been waiting to hear from the original cast from the movies to see if any of them might be interested in returning for the show. But at the moment, HBO is focusing on finding the right showrunner so that they can look at casting for the iconic pop-culture characters.
Many fans have been wondering if J.K. Rowling (The Ickabog, The Casual Vacancy) will be involved in the show due to the controversy over her comments on transgender issues. It has been announced that Rowling will be executive producing alongside Neil Blair (C.B. Strike, Stonehouse) and Ruth Kenley-Letts (The Midwich Cuckoos, Too Close). David Heyman (The Capture, White Noise), who developed the movies, is currently in talks to become a part of the new series.
Similar to Game of Thrones, HBO recognizes the potential the Harry Potter franchise has. So now that they are developing a new series, fans are wondering if HBO will then consider developing more series based on other events in the Harry Potter world like The Marauders, which would follow the adventures of Harry’s parents and their friends, or a series about the founding of Hogwarts. Hopefully, like Game of Thrones, the Harry Potter franchise will expand to include events outside the main books that fans want to see on screen.
The new Harry Potter adaptation will premiere sometime in 2025-26. The original Harry Potter movies are available to stream on Peacock. The Fantastic Beasts movies are available to stream on HBO Max.
