Deadline reports that Velma has been renewed by Max for a second season. The news was revealed on Thursday during a panel at Annecy International Animated Film Festival by the executive vice president of original comedy and adult animation for Adult Swim and Max, Suzanna Makkos.
Velma follows Mindy Kaling’s (The Office, Never Have I Ever) Velma Dinkley, the under-appreciated and unsung brains of the Scooby-Doo Mystery Inc. gang. The series is an animated adult mystery horror comedy and was first released on Max on January 12, 2023.
Along with Kaling, it stars Glenn Howerton (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, A.P. Bio), Constance Wu (Fresh Off the Boat, The Terminal List), and Sam Richardson (Ted Lasso, Veep).
The ensemble cast also includes “Weird Al” Yankovic (Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, Spy Hard), Debby Ryan (Insatiable, The Suite Life on Deck), Jane Lynch (Glee, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Cherry Jones (Succession, Signs), Fortune Feimster (The Standups, Life in Pieces), Shay Mitchell (You, Pretty Little Liars), Ken Leung (Industry, The Night Shift), Russell Peters (Last Comic Standing, Comedy Now!), Ming-Na Wen (Two and a Half Men, The Book of Boba Fett), Stephen Root (Barry, King of the Hill), Karl-Anthony Towns (Big City greens, What Men Want), Wanda Sykes (The Upshaws, Curb Your Enthusiasm), Yvonne Orji (My Dad the Bounty Hunter, Insecure), Gary Cole (Midnight Caller, NCIS), Kulap Vilaysak (Love, I Love You, Man), Melissa Fumero (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Gossip Girl), and Sarayu Blue (No Tomorrow, Never Have I Ever).
Charlie Grandy (Guys with Kids, Champions) serves as showrunner of Velma. It is executive produced by Kaling, Grandy, Sam Register (Ben 10, Teen Titans Go!), and Howard Klein (Jessica Jones, The Office).
At the same panel, Makkos also revealed that a new series from Tom Kauffman (Rick and Morty, Loki) is in development. The series is created by Kauffmen, Spencer Strauss (Quicksand, Car-Jumper), and David Seger (Strange Cases, Punks). Kauffman executive produces with Searchlight TV.
