‘Maury’ To End After 30 Seasons

Maury Povich’s (A Current Affair) daytime talk show, titled Maury, is slated to conclude after a 30-season run, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Povich is planning on retiring, and new episodes will cease airing in September.

The Maury Povich Show, as it was initially called, began airing in 1991 and earned popularity for its delivery of paternity tests and its use of the notable catchphrase “You are not the father” by Povich. The series showed ordinary people as guests, rather than celebrities. Povich often discussed major issues on the show, from domestic violence to unusual illnesses.

Maury‘s era was an iconic era of pop culture and was referenced in several different shows, from How I Met Your Mother to Madea’s Big Happy Family.

“[Maury episodes] touch so many classic themes, whether it’s love, distrust, conflict, drama,” Povich said to the Chicago Tribune in 2012. “And the paternity shows in particular, you’ve got he-said, she-said, is-he-the-father, isn’t-he. While soap operas play those themes out over six months, we play them out over 12 minutes.”

Before becoming a renowned talk show host, Povich began his career in Washington D.C. as a radio reporter, and became the host of A Current Affair in 1986, until his departure from the show in 1990s. Maury will continue to air in syndication after its cancellation.
