Matthew McConaughey Would Do More ‘True Detective’

Alright, alright, alright. According to Entertainment Weekly, Matthew McConaughey would be willing to reprise his role of Rust Cohle in the potential third season of the HBO drama True Detective.

Sitting down for an interview on The Rich Eisen Show, the topic of True Detective came up. McConaughey said he wanted to play Rust Cohle as soon as he saw the script for the show, even though he was originally going to audition to play Marty, who Woody Harrelson ended up portraying. “I can’t wait to hear what comes out of his mouth,” McConaughey said.

However, it may be a bit before McConaughey is able to reprise his role, as he said “The ball has not advanced at all” when it comes to a third season of the hit anthology drama. He did say that if it was written well, he wouldn’t hesitate for a second to do the show again.

This isn’t the first time that McConaughey has said he’d do a third season of True Detective. Back in June, Vanity Fair reported that McConaughey would do a third season, with him saying “I miss Rust Cohle, man.”

So far, only two seasons of True Detective have aired on HBO. The first season was critically acclaimed and starred McConaughey as Rust Cohle and Harrelson as Marty Hart. The first season focused on the two characters trying to hunt down a killer over a 17-year timespan. The show was told both in present day and in a series of flashbacks.

The second season of the show starred Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Taylor Kitsch and Vince Vaughan and was received less warmly than the first season was. The season focused on police officers from three different police departments working together to solve a murder.

Back in July, HBO said that True Detective isn’t dead at the network and both sides are trying to get things squared away to start another season.

“It is not dead,” Casey Bloys, HBO programming chief, told Entertainment Weekly. “I talked to Nic (Pizzolatto, True Detective showrunner) about it and both Nic and HBO are open to another season. I don’t think Nic  has a take and he’s working on some other projects. We’re open to somebody else writing it and Nic supervising it. It’s a valuable franchise, it’s not dead, we just don’t have a take for a third season yet.”
