Matt Walsh, Secondary Character on ‘VEEP’, Talks Reunion

In an interview with Deadline’s SXSW studio, Matt Walsh (You People, Unplugging, Into the Storm) who played a secondary character on political satire show VEEP, talks about having a possible reunion. Walsh says, “I have no breaking story about a VEEP comeback, I wish I did because it would blow up the internet.” A peculiar statement that gives a sliver of hope for the return of the show and main character President Selina Meyer.

Walsh was confronted by Deadline SXSW today, on March 10, 2023, during the premiere of the Searchlight film Flamin’ Hot directed by Eva Longoria (Desperate Housewives, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, John Wick). It was there where he was questioned about his previous role on VEEP and the chances of him reprising it.

“I know everybody would do it, there’s always been talk of a movie.” Walsh said via Deadline.

He also goes into detail about Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s (New Adventures of Old Christine, Seinfeld, Black Widow) performance as the title character: “She would be in a one-woman show, and I would be Mike and I would keep ruining it as her press secretary. She’d be happy to play that character forever doing live shows.”

Finally Walsh stated,  “It’s a bit of a family. You would have to do it right.” “We’re so far forward in the future, it would have to be a pivotal moment in her career, and the stakes would have to be anchored in reality. Obviously, we got in trouble when Trump became president because everything went out the window, there was no baseline for decency.”

Walsh’s character Mike McClintock is the White House press secretary during Meyer’s scattered presidential term, following her through the emotional tortures of campaigning across the country, creating bills or charities, and doing the unwanted grunt work as Vice President. After seven seasons and sixty-five episodes, the series had its finale on May 12, 2019; Selina is elected president this time and fulfills her full term. The episode then jumps in time to Selina’s funeral where all her co-stars, whether they be friends or enemies, come into attendance for her procession. Viewers then see how the characters lived their lives after their White House careers: some dead, some married, some imprisoned and some impeached.

Most recently the cast of VEEP got back together for a reading of a script from an episode of season five entitled “Mother” during the coronavirus pandemic shut down in December of 2020. The script reading was an effort to support voter turnout during the Georgeia State runoffs. Since the crew already reunited over Zoom, what’s stopping them from reuniting in the future where coronavirus restrictions are becoming more and more limited.
