NBC’s DC Comic series Constantine has cast the first lead with Matt Ryan.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Criminal Minds alum is close to finishing a deal with the drama, which is based on the graphic novels Hellblazer.
Constantine focuses on John Constantine, a master of the occult, who is struggling with his faith. His past is catching up with him and he must face the sins he committed while being thrust into a role where he is defending humanity from forces of darkness.
His character is a working-class Londoner with a dry humor. He is considered a mysterious conman and occult detective haunted by the passing of a young girl’s soul. He has studied the dark arts since his teens and taught himself spells, rituals, curses and conjuring. He wishes to speak with his dead mother, who died giving birth to him, but is unable too. He forms an alliance while saving the daughter of a late friend from demons.
Daniel Cerone (Dexter) will write the script with David Goyer (Batman Begins) executive producing. Neill Marshall (Game of Thrones) will direct the pilot. It is produced by Warner Bros. Television.
Ryan is repped by WME and Julian Belfrage Associates in the U.K.
