With just a month left before its global premiere, Marvel Studios released a new trailer for its upcoming limited series Secret Invasion. The Disney+ series stars Samuel L. Jackson (187, Marvel’s Avengers) and Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One, Bloodline) in a new chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The ‘Fight’ trailer arrives a few weeks after a special featurette on the series. View the video below.
Based on the 2008 comic by Brain Michael Bendis (Guardians of the Galaxy, Ultimate Spider-Man), Secret Invasion is an espionage thriller akin to Captain America: Winter Soldier that finds Jackson’s Nick Fury combating Earth’s infiltration of shape-shifting aliens. For years, the species known as Skrulls have been hiding in plain sight among us and are preparing to strike. Fury must partner with fellow friend and Skrull Talos (Mendelsohn) to weed out the global threat. As the tagline suggests, “Trust no one.”
The show sees the return of familiar MCU characters including Don Cheadle (Black Monday, House of Lies) as James Rhodes, Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother, Stumptown) as Maria Hill, and Martin Freeman (Black Panther, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey) as Agent Everett K. Ross. New on the roster is Olivia Coleman (The Favourite, Landscapers) Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones, Solo: A Star Wars Story), Kingsley Ben-Adir (One Night In Miami…, High Fidelity), and Carmen Ejogo (True Detective, The Penguin).
Recently Smulders spoke with People on how the series will invite a darker tone than what has been seen in previous MCU installments.
“It’s hard to know who to trust,” Smulders said in a report via The Hollywood Reporter. “Now, there is a major discovery of the Skrulls. Maria Hill has been trying to get Nick Fury back to Earth to help with a multitude of problems, but when the Skrulls become public knowledge, it finally gets his attention.”
Smulders also stated in her People interview how the series will highlight the supporting characters that have aided the flagship heroes from the inception of the franchise. In respect of what her own Maria Hill has been up to since the Blip, Smulders said, “I’d like to think that she’s been sipping Mai Tais on vacation somewhere after coming back from the Blip but most likely, she has been working on a mountain of backlogged issues.”
Secret Invasion arrives on June 21 exclusively on Disney+.
