Freeform and Marvel’s upcoming series Cloak & Dagger has released its new trailer, per The Verge.
Cloak & Dagger will be the first Marvel series on Freeform (an ABC channel geared toward younger audiences), but it will be joined by the recently announced New Warriors project. New Warriors can be likened to junior version of Marvel heroes The Avengers, and will include fan favorite Squirrel Girl.
Cloak & Dagger is an origin story full of teen angst and romance, which works well with the target demographic for Freeform. The trailer for Cloak & Dagger is more intense and hints at darker themes than many shows on Freeform, but focuses on the relationships of teens and the struggles of youth. These teens just also happen to be superhumanly connected and powerful.
Aubrey Joseph (playing Tyrone Johnson aka “Cloak”) and Olivia Holt (playing Tandy Bowen aka “Dagger”) star in Cloak & Dagger. The characters negotiate crime-fighting with the Tandy’s daggers of light and Ty’s mysteriously powerful cloak of darkness. In the original comic book series, the duo is experimented on with a new form of heroin and the drug they are given turns them into super heroes. They later go on to fight illegal and new deadly drugs.
Aubrey Joseph’s most recent role was Dwight Gooden Stone on HBO’s crime-thriller mini-series The Night Of.
Olivia Holt is a Disney Channel alum with previous roles on I Didn’t Do It and Disney XD’s Kickin’ It. She is also no stranger to superhuman powers, and played Spider Girl (Petra Parker) on the series Ultimate Spider-Man.
Cloak & Dagger is set to premiere on Freeform in early 2018 according to Entertainment Weekly. Joe Pokaski of Heroes is the showrunner, and Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory are executive producers. New Warriors is set to premiere at an undecided date sometime later in 2018.
