According to the Marvel Studios’ X account formerly known as Twitter revealed look into season three of What If..?. The animated series explores a multiverse of timelines and form infinite possibilities from them, hence the title. As Comicbook notes, many of the characters that appear in the series are reprising their roles to voice their live action roles.
According to Comicbook, the four photos include the Marvel Cinematic characters such as Bucky Barnes played by Sebastian Stan (Pam & Tommy, Sharper), Anthony Mackie (8 Mile, The Banker) as Captain America who will be teaming up with Monica Rambeau played by Teyonah Parris (Candyman, The Marvels), A Gundam mech suit in the style of Captain America, and David Harbour(Stranger Things, Black Widow)’s Red Guardian who seem to be on an adventure with Stan’s character. and a member of the Ant-Man crew growing enormous and manipulating Red Guardian.
According to Comicbook, considering the postponement to the Marvel Cinematic Universe production pipeline due to the strikes, it appears like the series may be far more significant part of franchise now that season three production is evidently underway and will be available for viewers to stream on Disney plus in the upcoming year.
Comicbook mentions that it would also be wise to act quickly as fans are now more receptive and engaged to What If..? than they were previously.
The fans of What If..? are probably hoping for a 2024 release date, which may not be likely. Bryan Andrews (Iron Man 2, The Avengers), director/producer comments to Phase Zero about the scheduling being uncertain at the moment.
Andrews says, “I thought that it could come out at the end of the year in 2024 possibly, but that would be tight. There’s some other group of people that are masterminding when things [release] and they’re moving things on the board, and I don’t know where we [What If…?] exist on that at this moment, as well as [Marvel Zombies]. Zombies, I’m still working on at the same time, and that’s going to be crazy and that’s coming out, but that keeps moving around too, right? So I wish I could help you but I can’t!”
The animated series What If..? may be able to finish its physical production in a timely manner, but there’s also the issue of how to fit the next season in with the upcoming Marvel films and TV series. What If..? has its own stand-alone anthology of the Marvel Cinematic Universe alternate realities, but the series has highlighted characters and plots that connect and related MCU TV series and films. Due to the Writers’ and Actors’ Strikes, the release dates of several upcoming movies, including Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts, had been pushed back.
