Guess whose coming back to stand-up?
After a long fourteen year absence since his last recorded special, Martin Lawrence will be debuting his third Showtime concert film, Martin Lawrence Doin’ Time: Uncut, next month.
Mr. Lawrence and Showtime have worked together on two previous concert versions of his stand-up routines, and it appears he is happy being at a network who knows his work well. According to The Wrap, the comedian issued a statement about his upcoming premiere: “I look forward to having my third concert film premiere on Showtime. Fourteen years is a long time between concert specials and I am excited to know that my TV audience will be able to enjoy this show as if they came to see me live.”
Although Mr. Lawrence has been a fixture in American comedy since the 1990s, he did take a hiatus from stand-up that lasted four years. This break ended in February, when Mr. Lawrence began working on the material for Martin Lawrence Doin’ Time: Uncut, and started traveling for his subsequent tour. The Showtime special was recorded at his Orpheum Theatre show in Los Angeles, California.
Mr. Lawrence serves as an executive producer for his special, alongside Studio71’s Gary Binkow and Michael Green. He is also joined by fellow producers Barry Hermann, Robert Lawrence, Rae Proctor, Sean Lampkin, and Michael Hubbard, who work with the You So Crazy production company and Studio71.
Martin Lawrence is also known for his roles in such movies as Bad Boys, Big Momma’s House, and Death at a Funeral. He’s starred in numerous films with great costars, but his franchise Bad Boys with Will Smith may be his most notable film role to date. In fact, as of August 11, Entertainment Weekly has confirmed that Bad Boys 3 (which will be titled Bad Boys for Life) has both Smith and Lawrence on board to star, with the film premiering sometime in early 2018. There are also rumors of a July 2019 opening for Bad Boys 4, but one can never be sure with such far-away deadlines.
However, one can be sure that this Showtime special will be a good reminder of Mr. Lawrence’s comedic talent, and a great way to reintroduce him to his stand-up audience.
Martin Lawrence Doin’ Time: Uncut will premiere on Friday, September 9, at 9 p.m.
