Mari Yamamoto (Not To Be Unpleasant, But We Need To Have A Serious Talk) has joined the cast of Apple TV+’s upcoming live-action series that is based on Legendary Television’s Monsterverse franchise, according to Deadline. Details on who Yamamoto will be playing are currently unclear and the series is untitled as of now.
Yamamoto joins a cast that already includes names such as Anna Sawai (F9: The Fast Saga), Ren Watabe (461 Days Of Bento), Kiersey Clemons (Lady And The Tramp), Joe Tippett (Mare Of Easttown), Elisa Lasowski (Blood Machines), Kurt Russell (Escape From New York), and Wyatt Russell (The Falcon And The Winter Soldier).
Deadline provided a description of the upcoming series: “Following the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and the shocking new reality that monsters are real, the untitled series will explore one family’s journey to uncover its buried secrets and a legacy linking them to the secret organization known as Monarch.”
Legendary’s Monsterverse began in 2014 with Godzilla, followed by 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, then 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and, most recently, 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong.
Matthew Shakman (Game Of Thrones) will direct the first two episodes and also serve as an executive producer alongside Chris Black (Mad Men), who will also serve as showrunner, Matt Fraction (Hawkeye), Tory Tunnell (Holy Rollers), Joby Harold (Obi-Wan Kenobi), Hiro Matsuoka (Godzilla: King of the Monsters), and newcomer Takemasa Arita.
Black and Fraction will executive produce the upcoming series for Legendary Television, Tunnell and Harold will produce for Safehouse Pictures, and Matsuoka and Arita will produce for Toho Co. Ltd. Toho owns the rights to many classic characters including Godzilla and has licensed the rights to Legendary for this series as the two production companies have a long-term relationship on the film franchise, according to Deadline.
