With the release of ID’s docuseries Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Children’s Television, people are starting to wonder how the creators got all of their answers and testimonials. Some are from simple interviews, some are from investigative journalism, but, according to IndieWire, former Nickelodeon star Marc Summers (Double Dare), he was blindsided as to what he was getting into. He claimed that the producers allegedly “ambushed” him with questions.
The actor was best known for hosting the game show Double Dare agreed to do the series based on the knowledge that it was going to be about his former network and what it was like to work on it. But, as the process continued, it was revealed to him that it was going to be a docu-series set out to expose the alleged wrongdoings of Nickelodeon creators Dan Schnieder (iCarly) and Brian Peck (Drake & Josh).
“They asked me what I thought of Nick, and the first 10 to 12 seconds, from what I understand, in this documentary is me saying all these wonderful things. But they did a bait and switch on me,” Summers told IndieWire. “They ambushed me. They never told me what this documentary was really about. And so they showed me a video of something that I couldn’t believe was on Nickelodeon. And I said, ‘Well, let’s stop the tape right here. What are we doing?’”
According to IndieWire, once the actor found out exactly what the series would entail such as Schnieders alleged inappropriate behavior and the alleged sexual assault Peck committed on Drake Bell (Drake & Josh), he completely walked out of filming.
“I left. So I got a phone call about six weeks ago saying you’re totally out of the show. And I went, ‘Great.’ Then they called me about four weeks ago and said, ‘Well, you’re in it, but you’re only in the first part of it because you talked about the positive stuff of Nickelodeon,’” said Summers. “What they didn’t tell me — and they lied to me about — was the fact that they put in that other thing where they had the camera on me when they ambushed me. And so, now we get into a whole situation about who’s unethical.”
Quiet on Set has been a widely popular series that has exposed the dark secrets from the depths of children’s television. The series, originally only containing 4 episodes, recently just added a fifth, which is now streaming on MAX.
