Lynn Whitfield Hints At Early Developments of ‘Greenleaf’ Spinoff Series

This August will mark a year since OWN’s megachurch family drama, Greenleaf, aired its series finale. It also marks the last time any updates regarding the proposed spinoff were heard. In an interview with TVLine, actress Lynn Whitfield (Eve’s Bayou, The Cheetah Girls), who portrayed Lady Mae Greenleaf, spoke about the early developments of the series that will feature Calvary Fellowship World Ministries’ First Lady.

“I’ve not read anything, but I know that he’s been working on it, and you know how brilliant he is,” Whitfield said via TVLine. The “he” Whitfield referred to is series’ creator and writer Craig Wright (Six Feet Under, Lost) who had second series, Delilah, premiere earlier this year on OWN.

“Craig, with all of his gusto, all of his talent and creativity… I think he’s thinking about it quite a lot. And we have had some conversations,” Whitfield told TVLine. “But, you know, the nature of our relationship is so funny. He’ll say, ‘What would Lady Mae like — red or white or blue?’ “I’ll say, ‘Oh, blue,’ and he’ll say, ‘OK, got it.’ And then he goes off and comes back with something brilliant. So we have had few of those kinds of conversations. We just have to wait to see where we end up,” Whitfield stated via TVLine.

Greenleaf explored the complicated lives of a family through the eyes of prodigal daughter Grace Greenleaf, played by Merle Dandridge (The Flight Attendant, The Last Of Us). The single mother returns home upon hearing of her sister, Faith’s, suicide. What was supposed to be a visit turned into a permanent stay as Grace seeks to unearth the family secrets that Faith buried with her.

Along with Whitfield, the show starred David Keith (The Princess Frog, Coraline) as Bishop James Greenleaf; Deborah Joy Winans (Don’t Waste Your Pretty, Color of Love) as younger sister, Charity; Lamman Rucker (Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Too, Meet the Browns) as brother and preacher, Jacob; and, Kim Hawthorne (I Am Somebody’s Child: The Regina Louise Story, Lucky Louie) as Jacob’s wife, Kerissa.

All five seasons of Greenleaf are available to stream on Netflix.
