While the series was almost brought to an end once by Fox and once by Netflix, Lucifer will return for its sixth and final season, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Netflix picked up the series in 2018 from Fox after they announced its cancellation after 3 seasons. Furthermore, Netflix announced last year that season 5 would be the series’ final season. However, they obviously had second thoughts about the series termination.
Lucifer features Tom Ellis (Miranda) as Lucifer Morningstar or more notably, the Devil, when he leaves Hell and moves to LA where he begins running his own nightclub and works with the Los Angeles Police Department. When Fox cancelled the series during the 2017-2018 season, its ratings were steady; however, Netflix picked it up for its 10 episode fourth season in May of 2019. Meanwhile, when the production shut down in mid-March due to the coronavirus pandemic, they were in the later stages of filming, according to The Hollywood Reporter. On Monday, Netflix announced that part one of season 5 will be released on August 21. A teaser was also released on Monday, a 66.6 second clip of scenes to look forward to this upcoming season. Alongside Ellis, the rest of the regular cast will return, including Lauren German (Chicago Fire, A Walk To Remember), Kevin Alejandro (True Blood, Arrow), Lesley-Ann Brandt (Spartacus, Heartlock), Aimee Garcia (El Chicano, Cadet Kelly), Inbar Levi (Imposters), and Graham McTavish (Outlander, The Hobbit).
The renewal was announced via Twitter with obvious allusions to the Devil and Hell. It can be watched below.
