Deadline has revealed that The Mandalorian actress and former MMA fighter, Gina Carano, still maintains a record of only one loss against Cris “Cyborg” Justino. She preserved her record as she gained a draw in her long-running heavyweight bout against the media conglomerate Disney. It was announced today in a joint statement that the two parties asked the court for a dismissal.
Deadline included a copy of the statement crafted by both parties that reads, “Pursuant to Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 41(a)(1)(A)(ii), Plaintiff Gina Carano, on the one hand, and Defendants The Walt Disney Company, Lucasfilm Ltd. LLC, and Huckleberry Industries (US) Inc., on the other, by and through their undersigned counsel, hereby stipulate that this action and all claims, including all defenses asserted therein, be dismissed with prejudice.” The dismissal awaits a judge’s approval.
Per Deadline, the details of the settlement have been kept under wraps. Yet the fact that Disney’s posture has changed from what it was when they chose to part ways with Carano to the new posture of excited to work with her alludes that the victor may be the one-time cage match gladiator.
Variety offered look at the statement crafted by Lucasfilm, now owned by Disney, which had this to say, “The Walt Disney Company and Lucasfilm are pleased to announce that we have reached an agreement with Gina Carano to resolve the issues in her pending lawsuit against the companies. Ms. Carano was always well respected by her directors, co-stars, and staff, and she worked hard to perfect her craft while treating her colleagues with kindness and respect. With this lawsuit concluded, we look forward to identifying opportunities to work together with Ms. Carano in the near future.”
According to a previous article by mxdwn, Carano was relieved from her duties after the proud conservative made social media post comparing the plight of a conservative in America to that of the Jewish people during the Holocaust. To this, Disney claimed she had “denigrated people based on cultural and religious identities”, as the Deadline article reads. This statement and the one released today seem to be polar opposites, and the newest installment in companies’ pandering to the right-wing political movement spurred on by the recent election. American Eagle jeans recently made headlines for including Sydney Sweeny in their ad with a jeans/ genes double entendre that drew criticism for allegedly promoting eugenics and what Axios describes as “a departure from inclusive advertising and sizing.” Bud Light also recently shifted from what many perceived as left-wing advertising back to its classic all-American vibe. To top it all off, Target, which was leader in the DEI initiative department, recently announced it would be scaling back these efforts and changing its Supplier Diversity team to the new title of Supplier Engagement Team.
Per mxdwn, Disney had harsh words to say about Carano when they parted ways, saying that her conservative comments were “abhorrent and unacceptable.” It seems that Cerano now feels vindicated as she posted to her personal account a statement regarding the settlement, thanking Elon Musk for his financial support and including, yes, she is smiling.
