Long-Running AMC Series ‘The Walking Dead’ Cancelled

On Wednesday morning, AMC announced that its long-running series The Walking Dead will be coming to an end, according to CNN. The series’ 10th season finale release date, which was halted due to COVID-19, was just recently announced in July while the series will eventually conclude after a 24 episode 11th season in 2022. The series will be survived by an upcoming spinoff series set to premiere in 2023.

Based on the comic books by Robert Kirkman, The Walking Dead depicts the lives of survivors following a zombie apocalypse as they rush to safety. The series will run for 11 seasons and stars Norman Reedus (The Boondock Saints, Ride with Norman Reedus), Andrew Lincoln (Love Actually, Talking Dead), Danai Gurira (Black Panther, Avengers: Endgame), Melissa McBride (The Mist, The Happys), and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Supernatural, Grey’s Anatomy). The untitled spinoff series will feature Reedus and McBride as their original characters with The Walking Dead showrunner Angela Kang (Terriers, Harlequin) serving as co-creator alongside Scott M. Gimple (Fillmore!).

Released in 2010, the series was once the most-watched show on television, prompting several spin-offs, including Fear the Walking Dead and the upcoming The Walking Dead: World Beyond. Meanwhile, several more spin-off projects taking place in The Walking Dead universe are currently in the works. In statement, Gimple concluded, “We have a lot of thrilling story left to tell on ‘TWD,’ and then, this end will be a beginning of more ‘Walking Dead’ –– brand new stories and characters, familiar faces and places, new voices, and new mythologies. This will be a grand finale that will lead to new premieres. Evolution is upon us. The Walking Dead lives,” via CNN. The final season was promoted on the series’ Twitter page which can be seen below:
