Lonely Island Comedy ‘Alone Together’ Is Greenlit

The Lonely Island comprises the comic stylings of Akiva Schaffer, Jorma Taccone, and Andy Samberg. The group has brought their skits to Comedy Central, YouTube, and of course Saturday Night Live. Things are still looking good for the group nearly fifteen years later, as Variety reports that their latest series has been picked up by Freeform.

Their new project, Alone Together, is about two millennial outcasts that have a platonic male-female friendship, trying to break into the LA scene.

The series was created by Esther Povitsky and Benji Aflalo, who have histories with comedic series; Povitsky previously worked on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Lady Dynamite, while Aflalo gained experience on Not Safe with Nikki Glaser. They will also be executive producers, alongside Samberg, Taccone, Schaffer, and Hulu executive Billy Rosenberg. The pair will also star in the series under their same first names.

Alone Together will also host a cavalcade of familiar faces to the comedy scene. Edgar Blackmon (who worked on another Lonely Island project, Poster: Never Stop Never Stopping), Jim O’Heir (Parks and Rec), Chris D’Elia (Undateable) and Ginger Gonzaga (Wrecked), among numerous others, also appear in the pilot episode.

Freeform’s executive vice president of programming and development has already released a statement about the news:

“We are so proud of this series as it perfectly embodies the evolving Freeform brand and our dedication to programming for the 20-something viewer. Our audience will quickly fall in love as we did with real-life best friends Esther and Benji, who navigate a world of perfect 10’s as self-proclaimed 6’s,” says Karey Burke.
