‘Loki’ Season 2 in Early Development as Director Departs; New Director is Being Sought Out

Before Loki even premiered on Disney+, talks of a second season circulated around Marvel Studios, and season two was confirmed at the end of the season one finale. However, according to Comicbook.com, the absence of director Kate Herron (Sex Education) has prompted a search for a new director.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige recently spoke with Collider to confirm that the series is looking for another director for season two. “It is underway,” Feige told Collider. “We’re developing it as we speak. The hope is that much of the same team will return. Kate is going on to bigger and better things, so the director search will begin shortly.”

When news of a second season broke out, Herron went to Deadline to confirm that her journey with the series ended on season one, and she would not be returning for another season. “I’m not returning,” Herron told Deadline, confirming she had her own projects to pursue before returning. “I always planned to be just on for this and to be honest, Season 2 wasn’t in the — that’s something that just came out and I’m so excited. I’m really happy to watch it as a fan next season, but I just think I’m proud of what we did here and I’ve given it my all. I’m working on some other stuff yet to be announced.”

Keeping in mind the multitude of projects Marvel Studios has planned for the next couple of years, season two of Loki may not happen for a while. Comicbook.com predicts that Loki may not return until late 2022 or 2023, especially since Loki sets up a Multiverse saga that will continue with Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. In addition to other projects coming to Disney+ from the Star Wars franchise, the next year or so could be pretty crowded for Loki to come back.

Loki is set to return for season two, and a released date has not been set. Season one can be streamed on Disney+.
