The popular Netflix series will be closing its doors come the third season. Deadline has confirmed that Locke & Key will be ending with its third season at the streamer. However, this is not an abrupt cancelation as Netflix had planned a three-season arc for the series.
Following the breakout first season, executive producers and co-showrunners Carlton Cuse (Colony, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan) and Meredith Averill were able to envision an arc for the series and how to end it.
“Once we began working on the series, we felt three seasons was the ideal length to bring the story of the Locke family and their Keyhouse adventures to a satisfying conclusion,” Cuse and Averill said in a statement to Deadline. “As storytellers, we are grateful that we had the opportunity to tell our version of Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez’s incredible story exactly the way we wanted. We’re keeping the magical keys, though, for our own personal use.”
The supernatural drama follows the Locke siblings — Tyler, Kinsey, and Bode — who move to their ancestral home following the mysterious murder of their father. The siblings soon discover a number of mysterious keys in the house that open doors in magical ways, but then become aware of a demonic entity that is also searching for the keys.
The series stars Darby Stanchfield (Scandal), Connor Jessup (Falling Skies), Emilia Jones (CODA), Jackson Robert Scott (It Chapter One), Aaron Ashmore (Smallville), Brendan Hines (Scandal), and Hallea Jones (Let It Snow).
Locke & Key first premiered on Netflix in February 2020 and returned for a second season back in October. Season three is set to return later this year.
