Fans of the John Wick action movies may be in for new stories stemming from the blockbuster franchise as Lionsgate Television is currently developing a sequel series, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Actor Keanu Reeves (The Matrix, Speed), who stars as the boogeyman of the assassin world, John Wick, will executive produce the series.
Joining Reeves as an executive producer is Chad Stahelski (The Matrix Resurrections, The Matrix Reloaded), who is responsible for directing all four of the John Wick movies via The Hollywood Reporter. Stahelski maintains creative oversight of the John Wick franchise in a deal upheld by Lionsgate and is set to direct the pilot for the new series. Robert Levine (Human Target, Black Sails) is set to be the series’ showrunner and writer.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the new series has been given the working title John Wick: Under the High Table. Currently, Lionsgate Television is “shopping Under the High Table to potential buyers,” in other words, negotiating with media platforms and companies to decide who will push the series to get officially greenlit.
If the series were to get off the ground, this would not be the first John Wick spinoff series to get produced. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Peacock miniseries The Continental, which premiered in 2023, proved the expansiveness of the John Wick universe. The Continental debuted as Peacock’s most-watched television series premiere in 2023, as per mxdwn.
While The Continental took place as a prequel, John Wick: Under the High Table will take place after the events of John Wick: Chapter 4, with the official logline explaining: “John Wick has left the world of the High Table in a tenuous position and a collection of new characters will look to make a name for themselves while some of the franchise stalwart characters remain committed to the old-world order. The series will combine new and old and thrust the Wick universe into a new age.”
According to mxdwn, Stahelski is excited to breathe air into other characters’ stories seen throughout the John Wick franchise, saying, “I think TV is a better format for that, I think because people can jump into the backgrounds, you don’t have to spend so much time with the first act set up and all that.”
Only time will tell whether this new installment in the John Wick series comes to fruition, but fans can stay hopeful that the John Wick universe isn’t finished sharing its stories.
