‘Like a Dragon: Yakuza’ Goes From Video Game To Tv Series According to Comic Con

Sega’s iconic Yakuza video game franchise received major news at the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con as its latest addition in the franchise, Like a Dragon: Yakuza, is being made into a Prime Video series. The new TV series will be set in the fictional district, Kamurochō, and focuses on Kazuma Kiryu, played by Ryoma Takeuchi (Kamen Rider Drive: Surprise Future), a former yakuza member, who has a passion for justice and reflects on his past decisions. Other known members, alongside Roma, will be Kento Kaku (House of Ninjas), who will play Kazuma’s childhood friend, Nishikiyama Akira.

The teaser trailer for the series has already generated significant buzz, offering fans a tantalizing glimpse into what to expect. It starts by showing clips from all the games within the franchise. The opening scene shows someone getting a mysterious tattoo, later to reveal it being that of a dragon.

The series will be directed by critically acclaimed director Masaharu Take (Underdog: Part One) and executively produced by Erik Barmack (Hunting Ava Bravo).There was a special message from the executive producer of RYU GA GOTOKU Studio, Masayoshi Yokoyama (Yakuza 0),about his process in creating the crime action game. While newcomers will immerse themselves in a captivating story of friendship, betrayal and the pursuit of justice, fans of the games can expect to see familiar characters and locations brought to life.

The live adaptation series is scheduled to make its worldwide premiere on Prime Video with three episodes on October 24. The series will be a wonderful addition to the streaming service’s vast library, which contains other renowned shows like Fallout, The Rings of Power, and The Boys. With its intense action sequences, compelling characters and exploration of Japanese culture, Like a Dragon: Yakuza aims to capture the essence of the beloved video game series while offering a fresh perspective for television audiences.
