HBO’s ‘The Penguin’ Confirmed To Bridge Into The Upcoming Batman Sequel

According to Comicbook, Lauren LeFranc (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D), the creator of the HBO series The Penguin, confirms the series will directly lead into the upcoming Batman sequel created by Matt Reeves (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes). In recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, LeFranc explained how The Penguin series connects itself to The Batman storyline.

“We are the bridge between the two films. We’re going almost directly into the second film Matt has planned,” said LeFranc via Entertainment Weekly.

The Penguin series is set to premiere on September 8, 2024, and its second trailer can be found on YouTube with over 1.4 million views.

The plot of The Penguin follows the death of the notorious gang leader of Gotham City, Carmine Falcone. Carmine’s death created an enormous power vacuum within Gotham City’s criminal underworld. The Penguin, or Oswald Cobblepot, plans to conquer Falcone’s empire, believing it is much weaker than before now that it is run by Carmine’s daughter, Sofia Falcone.

The Penguin will be played by Colin Farrell (S.W.A.T), who also acted as the Penguin in the first Reeves Batman movie in 2022.

In addition, the producer of The Penguin, Dylan Clark (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), confirms that the team has plans to film another television series related to The Batman

“There is another television series we are going to do. We’re looking at this entire world as it relates to who Batman is – the antagonists around them, all the crime that has to be navigated in the city – and trying to figure out where are the areas that are best to explore,” said Clark via Entertainment Weekly

LeFranc holds very high expectations for this spinoff series and has nothing but praise for everyone working with him to create The Penguin series.

“ I have long been a fan of the world The Batman, and Matt’s film is such a powerful and bold entry into the canon. I am excited and humble to continue telling stories in the grimy world of Gotham City – and what better excuse to channel my inner villain than to tell the story of Oswald Cobblepot? I am thrilled to work with Colin, Matt, Dylan, 6th & Idaho, Warners, and HBO Max as we work to bring this story to the screen,” LeFranc said to Comicbook.com.
