Last week came with the shocking news of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert being struck down and canceled as a financial decision. The cancellation of the beloved late night show didn’t come without pushback, either. According to mxdwn, the Writers Guild of America even called for an investigation into this cancellation. Among those in support of Stephen Colbert (The Late Show, Whose Line is it Anyway?) include his fellow late night show hosts, who turned up for him in the audience.
On Monday, Jimmy Fallon (Saturday Night Live, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon), Seth Meyers (Late Night with Seth Myers, Saturday Night Live), John Oliver (Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, The Bugle), Jon Stewart (The Daily Show, The Problem with Jon Stewart), and Andy Cohen (Watch What Happens Live!, Love Connection) all appeared on The Late Show in an episode that also saw many other stars, including Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton, In The Heights) and Weird Al Yankovic (The Weird Al Show, The Compleat Al). The episode began with a performance of a Coldplay song: a reference the recent scandal ending in the resignation of the CEO of Astronomer after appearing with the HR chief on a kiss-cam at a concert.
In the audience enjoying the song were Colbert’s fellow late-night show hosts, who could be seen drinking beers, giving middle fingers, and pretending to kiss. According to Deadline, the group of show hosts were relatively close with one another; in fact, Colbert used to work under Stewart at The Daily Show and currently is an executive producer of The Late Show. The others notably bonded during the 2023 writers’ strike, hosting a podcast titled Strike Force 5. The podcast was also hosted by Jimmy Kimmel (Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Set For Life), who did not appear on Monday’s episode of The Late Show due to being on holiday.
After the show host appearances, Colbert stopped the song prematurely as he was handed a letter stating that the show would be cancelled as a “financial decision.” Making light of the cancellation, he then joked that it was due to Miranda and Weird Al’s Coldplay performance, saying, “Since you started playing that song, the network has lost, and I don’t know how this is possible, $40M-$50M.”
The Late Show will conclude May 2026 after the end of this season.
